'Design & Technology is about making things that people want and that work well.

Creating these things is hugely exciting: it is an inventive, fun activity.'

James Dyson, Chairman, Dyson Ltd

Vision:

To focus on a whole school approach to Design & Technology where strong links with a range of other subjects provides stimulating, meaningful contexts and produces high quality products with a real purpose.

Aims:

To excite, challenge, inspire and provide real opportunities for inventiveness in Design & Technology.

Children will develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate fully in an increasingly technological world.

Children will be able to build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users.

Children will critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products, as well as the work of others.

To instil a love of cooking where children understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn to cook using ingredients they have grown themselves at school and home.

Subject Leader: Mrs Shortland

Design & Technology is implemented at KS1 within a variety of exciting topics and at KS2 as a separate, stimuating subject but maintaining strong, meaningful links with other curriculum areas. Children work in a range of relevant contexts, such as the classroom and school, our playgrounds and dedicated planting beds, the local community and, in accordance with the new curriculum, we are strengthening and developing other contexts such as the home, industry, culture, leisure and enterprise.

The four key activities which characterise all Design & Technology work at Tewin Cowper are:

1. Designing products that work, are appealing and innovative. Products which have a real purpose and suit particular users needs and wants. Children's ideas are developed, modelled and communicated through annotated drawings and sketches, templates, mock-ups, cross-sectional exploded diagrams, pattern pieces and computer-aided design.

2. Making the designed product by choosing and using a wide range of:

                                                    - tools and equipment accurately and safely

                                                    - materials and components, including construction materials, textiles and ingredients

3. Evaluating through investigation and analysis a range of existing products, as well as children's own ideas and items they have made, against their design criteria and, through discussion and investigation, to improve their work. This also involves understanding how key events and individuals within Design and Technology, both past and present, have helped shape the world.

4. Developing and applying Technical Knowledge of how to:

                                           - stiffen and strengthen structures

                                           - use mechanical systems such as wheels and axles, gears, pulleys and levers

                                           - use electrical systems such as series circuits with switches, buzzers and motors

                                           - (KS2) apply their understanding of computing to program, monitor and control their products

Cooking and Nutrition projects are an integral part of Design & Technology at Tewin Cowper and as part of their work, children are taught how to cook and apply the principles of good nutrition and healthy eating. Children learn where food comes from and, increasingly, prepare and cook a variety of mainly savoury dishes using a range of techniques. They also learn about growing seasons for produce as well as how and where ingredients are grown, reared, caught and processed. To support us in this, and with strong links to our science curriculum, we have developed raised planting beds to grow our own fresh produce, such as a variety of herbs, fruit and vegetables, which the children will then increasingly use in their cooking.

We are particularly fortunate to have a wonderful new portable cooker and cooking trolley which is currently being fully equipped and organised in order to deliver the new curriculum effectively. It has been put to good use in most classrooms so far and we look forward to using it for many years in the future. Many thanks to our PTA for funding this.
