Welcome to Oak Tree Class!

The academic year has an essential balance of taking on responsibilites as leaders in our school, hard work and inspiring and engaging learning. Included in the year's learning will be exciting topic areas such as Space, Britain After WWII, Christianity, Audacity and lots more! There will of course be SATs for year 6, a residential trip, stand alone subject-based work, sporting competitions and to finish off, the summer play and year 6 leavers' service.

Year 6 is a special year and Oak Tree Class does not disappoint. It is the hardest that the children will work through primary school, the most challenging, but also the most rewarding.

All the children in the class will study English five times a week and maths four times a week, with science, RE, French and PE taught weekly while the other subjects are all blocked into units throughout the terms.

In the summer term we are very fortunate to have our own swimming pool which we use at least twice a week, where we learn: life-saving skills, water-polo and synchronised swimming.

Please see below for information you may find useful to help you support your child's learning. This will be added to throughout the year.

Year 6 SATs 2017

SATs Tests for Year 6 pupils will take place between Monday 8th May and Thursday 11th May 2017

In the summer term of 2017, children in Year 6 will take the new style SATs papers first introduced in 2016. These tests, in English and maths, will reflect the new national curriculum, and are intended to be more rigorous.

At the end of Year 6, children will sit tests in:

    • Reading
    • Maths
    • Spelling, punctuation and grammar

These tests will be both set and marked externally, and the results will be used to measure your child's progress and the school's performance. Your child’s marks will be used in conjunction with teacher assessment to give a broader picture of their attainment.

Writing will be assessed in class by Mrs Shortland in the months just before and just after SATs, so full attendance is essential.

Year 6 Revision for EASTER!

The children have all worked hard all year, it is essential they revise over Easter to stop them from taking a backward step in their learning.  A little every day is much better than lots at the last minute! I have sent home a revision booklet which is part of their homework. They must do a little very day for 10 days. It's fun and child-friendly.

There is also a special Year 6 Revision page under Oak Class on DbPrimary with lots of activities the children can access, including many of those listed here. There are also lots of activities saved to their home page on DbPrimary which will help them with essential skills such as spelling and times tables. They will earn rewards on our learning platform for their effort and achievements. Booster classes will continue after EASTER, on Tuesday morning from 8:05am (for a prompt start at 8:10am) for extra Guided Reading, and Monday and Wednesday straight after school until 4:30pm for maths and grammar.

Spellings:

All Common Exception Word spellings up to year 6 will need to be revised. See attachments below.

Reading:

Take an interest in what your child is reading and discuss the book, asking questions beginning with how, why, where, who, when and which. Ensure he or she reads a wide range of genre and looks up any unknown words in the dictionary. Discuss the meanings of these and look for words with similar meanings.  Ask your child to explain aspects of the story, such as the characters or setting. Compare and contrast settings and characters e.g. How is the main character different/same as character x?
